The sales pitch never changed, and it always sounded so reasonable. Give referees better toys, and the robberies stop, because a machine catches what a linesman squinting across forty yards never will. The phantom offsides would vanish, the ghost goals would finally count, and soccer's dumbest recurring argument would be put out of its misery at last.
That future showed up at the 2026 World Cup. There's a sensor in the ball now. Cameras trace the offside line to the centimeter, and an AI sits in a booth whispering the tight calls into the referee's ear. A month in, it's also the most bitterly officiated tournament anybody can remember.
Just the other day, Egypt filed a formal complaint over a video review that erased a goal against Argentina and helped shove the Pharaohs out the door. The week before, Croatia went home against Portugal because a chip in the ball snitched on a touch nobody on earth could see.
It happens every couple of days now, and it’s anyone’s guess what will happen next. Somebody loses his mind over a replay that settles nothing, and another country flies home convinced the robots rigged it.
Regardless, right or wrong, every one of these meltdowns doubles as a free ad for the outfits that build the gear, which is why it's turned into one of the best businesses in sports.
The Ball That Ended Croatia's Summer
Start with Croatia, because the machine got everything right and still felt like a fix to help Cristiano Ronaldo advance. On July 2 in Toronto, Josko Gvardiol smashed home a stoppage-time equalizer against Portugal and was already mid-celebration when the goal was disallowed.
The ball had felt a touch. A split second earlier, it'd caught the faintest graze off Croatia's Igor Mantanovic, just enough to leave a teammate offside in the buildup. None of a dozen replay angles could confirm it. All they had was a spike on FIFA's "heartbeat graphic," a little squiggle on a screen that ended a nation's summer and the legendary Luka Modric’s international career.
That squiggle comes courtesy of the Adidas Trionda and the 500Hz sensor KINEXON tucks inside it. A guy at Georgia Tech clocked its accuracy at 99.99 percent. The tech did its job perfectly, and that's the maddening part. You can't argue with a machine that's right, no matter how badly you want to.
Croatia trudged off, certain it'd been robbed, and that's the whole point. When the machine gets a call dead right, and the crowd loses it anyway, you haven't ended the argument so much as found a way to start a fresh one every couple of days, on live TV, forever.
Egypt's Robbery Wasn't the Ball's Fault
Now, Egypt, where the tech everybody screamed about had almost nothing to do with it. No sensor disallowed the goal Mostafa Zico buried against Argentina. A referee did that, after VAR flagged a shirt-tug in the buildup so minor that Jamie Carragher said it'd have stood in England, Spain, or Italy without anyone blinking.
It was a human being making a human call while wearing a very expensive machine as an alibi.
The whole industry runs on one distinction, and almost everybody smears it. A sensor can tell you exactly where the line is or the precise instant a boot meets the ball, and it'll do it flawlessly. Ask it whether a shove was a foul, and it's got nothing.
Point a 99.99 percent accurate ball at a judgment call, and all you've built is a fancier version of the same old argument, now with better graphics. The gear was meant to kill doubt, not move it around.
The money, though, is where it stops being funny. Egypt going out in the round of 16 instead of the quarters cost the federation about $4 million; the gap between the $16 million it banked and the $20 million it didn't. Set that next to a tournament FIFA expects to clear $8.9 billion, and it's a rounding error, which tells you just how much now rides on a squiggle.
Why Controversy Is Great for Business
If you run those numbers across a hundred-plus matches, you can see why the people selling this stuff aren't losing any sleep over the bad press.
Officiating tech is already a $4.5 billion market growing better than 20 percent a year, and the sensor slice is the fastest part of it, up almost 22 percent. No federation in history has ever reacted to a refereeing scandal by buying less gear.
The winners' circle is small and getting fat. Sony's Hawk-Eye works the high end, handling tennis, cricket, and now NFL first downs. KINEXON is the bit that literally lives inside the ball. Under all of it sit Genius Sports and Sportradar running the data plumbing, and Sportradar just dropped $225 million on IMG Arena's rights portfolio to run even more.
The whole loop is gorgeous if you're on the right end of it. A ref blows a call, and within the hour, the clip's gone around the world. The federation panics about looking like a clown on live TV, so it writes a check for more cameras and chips to prove it cares about fairness. What fans see as a scandal, the vendors see as a warm sales lead with a broadcast budget behind it.
The Money Isn't in the Gadget
None of which means the smart play is a better camera or a slicker chip. Hardware gets cheaper every year, and any half-decent engineer can jam a sensor into a ball over a long weekend. The real prize is becoming the system of record, the one certified feed a league wires straight into its rulebook, because that's the piece nobody can rip out.
That land grab is already on, and not just in soccer. Baseball wrote automated ball-strike challenges into its 2026 season, where spring tests had them running at 4.1 a game and 13.8 seconds each. The NFL leans on Hawk-Eye to measure first downs now. Tennis fired its human line judges outright, and the Premier League runs its offside calls off as many as thirty cameras.
Once a league's rulebook depends on your feed, you've stopped being a vendor. You're plumbing. Rip you out, and the league has to rewrite its whole rulebook from scratch, the kind of switching cost that makes a CFO weak in the knees.
Better yet, it never ends. The thing renews every September, whether the customer still likes you or not.
Where I Come Clean
Quick confession before I keep going. I run the finances for a company in exactly this business, the kind that builds sensor-in-the-ball tech, so read the rest knowing I've got a horse in this race. And this week, my little corner of it ran smack into the World Cup.
Over in the NBA, they're running the same trick at Summer League, with chips inside the basketballs in Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. It's the Trionda story in high-tops.
The ball tracks itself, and refs use the feed to settle possession and out-of-bounds calls without stopping for the usual replay huddle. Soccer's ball learned to talk a few years back, and basketball's is picking it up now.
There's one line I repeat to my board so often that they've started finishing it for me. The chip is not the asset. It's cheap, and soon every ball will have one. The asset is the certified data it spits out, and the moat is being the feed a league can't bring itself to unplug.
Own that, and you own the sport's memory. Which, once you clear away the noise, is what everybody's really fighting about.
Where the Smart Money Goes
None of this saves us from ourselves. The tech keeps getting sharper, and the fights keep getting louder, because being right and ending the argument were never the same thing. You can measure a shirt-tug to the millimeter and still touch off an international incident over whether it mattered.
So if you're deploying capital, don't chase whatever gadget's trending this week. Back the outfit that turns itself into the source of truth, the feed a league can't unplug without rewriting its own book. That business gets paid on the great calls and the howlers alike, and the whole market's headed past $22 billion by 2035.
The ball's learned to talk. Owning what it says is the whole game.
